Before you get started it’s worth knowing the rules of the road in the country you’re in, and the three classes of e-bikes. Let’s take the United States as an example, electric bikes fall into three different categories, or classes as they’re known:
- Class 1 electric bicycle: Is as an e-bike with a motor that only gives assistance when the rider is pedaling and stops giving assistance when the bike hits 20 miles per hour.
- Class 2 electric bicycle: Is as an e-bike with a motor that is only used to propel the bike and it doesn’t provide assistance when the bike gets to 20 miles per hour.
- Class 3 electric bicycle: Is as an e-bike with a motor that that only gives assistance when the rider is pedaling and stops giving assistance when the bike hits 28 miles per hour.
