Are lighter electric bikes better for a daily commute?

You want a commuter e-bike but you can’t carry a heavy electric bike up and down stairs – we feel you! Check out momentum’s lightest ever e-bike, the Voya E+

How much do lighter electric bikes weigh? It varies, but on average around 55 pounds (~25kg), making them suitable for your daily commute to the office or for riding around town.

First things first, a lighter e-bike doesn’t necessarily make it better or more affordable. For example, you might need a heavier cargo e-bike that suits your lifestyle and needs. However, if you are looking for a lighter e-bike and all the benefits it comes with, then read on because the VOYA E+ is Momentum’s lightest e-bike to date. However, there’s a small disclaimer! If you’re looking for an accurate number, we suggest you get your local dealer to weigh it for you; as the e-bike’s weight will depend on the size, finish, hardware, and accessories you pick.

Momentum’s e-bikes are efficient: charge faster, ride longer

City roads are generally flat, smooth, and relatively easy to ride on (sorry San Francisco!). This means you don’t need to use the auto mode all the time. You would be extending your e-bike’s battery life since you wouldn’t have to charge it that often. All Momentum e-bikes come with fast-charge technology and can be plugged into any wall outlet. This is a game changer for people who live a fast-paced life. Depending on the Momentum model, it usually takes between 3 to 5 hours to get a full charge. Stay tuned for a future article on different tips we have for you to keep your battery in tip top shape!

Fun fact:you don’t need to charge your e-bike fully. For instance, the Momentum Voya E+ can reach an 80% charge in just over 2 hours! This would let you ride for a solid 72 kilometers (approx. 44.7 miles) from just that one charge. Neat huh?

Lighter e-bike batteries offer flexibility

Lighter batteries are naturally integrated into lighter e-bikes to allow the rider to move faster and more easily around the city. They offer flexibility like normal bicycles with the added bonus of having the option to power your pedaling. This is perfect if you don’t want to break a sweat; when you want to cover more ground while commuting or exploring; or simply when you’re tired.

Average e-bikes can go as fast as 20 to 28 miles per hour (approx. 32 to 45km per hour). Not bad when you want to cover more ground. Just make sure you have enough energy to pedal if your battery runs out!

Lighter e-bikes are versatile and convenient

People who commute by bike don’t always ride the whole way. If you’ve seen people carrying bikes on and off subways, trains and sometimes buses, you’ll know what we mean. Some people prefer to live in suburban areas at the fringe of the city or in a neighboring city and then commute part way by train on their way to work. It makes sense for those who want to save time during rush hour, especially if they live in a city where public transportation is less than ideal (we’re looking at you Dallas!).

You might have also noticed that lighter e-bikes are a favorite for smaller or older riders. This is because they’re much easier to handle without straining the body. In addition, because of their lighter weight, these e-bikes can easily be used in off-motor mode.

Lighter e-bikes look great!

Ok, we’re biased but our newest, lightest e-bike looks so cutting edge because it’s smartly designed to conceal the slimline, lighter e-bike batter and electric components.. It’s  also sleeker and more minimal in form, without compromising its sturdiness and durability. That’s why we love the Voya E+ so much. It comes in a variety of colors, so you can do you!

What you need to know about lightweight e-bike

TL; DR. If you skipped ahead to this section because you’re short on time, the gist is that lightweight e-bikes are perfect for commuting. They share the same advantages as their un-assisted counterparts and heavier e-bikes, like having batteries with enough juice to power your daily journey but because they’re lightweight, they give you that added flexibility and convenience to move around with ease, especially if you’re also on the lighter side or just don’t want to lift a heavier e-bike.

Fun fact about electric bikes

Are you convinced yet? No? Well here’s another fun fact: did you know the first e-bike designs were actually patented all the way back in 1895? R&D has come a long way, especially for batteries. In fact, between the 2010s and the 2020s, battery production costs dropped by more than 87%. Meaning now is the best time to get your first e-bike!
