Join us for World Bicycle Day – for the People and the Planet!

Cycling is well loved these days! Anyone can hop on two wheels to exercise, commute, compete and socialize (or not socialize? Me-time is important too!). Cycling is three times faster than walking and much gentler on the muscles than running, meaning you get to go further with less effort. Cycling also helps power the sustainability movement and is amazing at bringing people together. What’s not to love?

What is World Bicycle Day? A Brief History

World Bicycle Day was established on June 3rd, 2018. The power of bicycles, traditional or electric, is undeniable. But before it became such a big movement, it actually started as an academic project led by Professor Leszek Sibilski in 2015. He was studying how bicycles could improve the lives of people, the local economy, and (of course) the environment. His project later snowballed into a grassroots campaign backed by the World Bank through the “Sustainable Mobility for All” initiative. Momentum kept building up until it was adopted by the United Nations. A beautiful logo was even designed, showing different cyclists riding on different types of bikes around the world!

"World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle — a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation” - United Nations.

Bikes have shaped the fabric of society for the past 200 years and continue to do so today in more ways than we realize. Some of our favorite examples include giving women newfound freedom and independence in the 19th century (they were for the first time rocking their looks with pants!). Today, cycling is also used as a peaceful form of protest on environmental and social issues like the World Naked Bike Ride movement.

A Celebration Full of Traditions

Cycling is often an activity intertwined with meaningful traditions. For kids, learning how to ride a bicycle without training wheels is a rite of passage. For students, buying their first bike with their own pocket money marks a new phase of independence. In Denmark and other Nordic countries, people get customized cargo bikes when their families expand. In Eritrea, cycling is a sacred symbol of their identity and pride; every child learns to bike with hopes of competing one day and there’s not a single weekend where the streets aren’t closed for a cycling event!

Today, the world has a new tradition – cycling for sustainability.

Ready to celebrate? We recommend finding out if there’s a local cycling group that’s organizing a tour around your city for World Bicycle Day. Join and you might even make new friends there! Don’t worry if you don’t have a bike. There are tons of bike rental stores in most cities. Or if you were thinking about investing in one, this is the perfect occasion. Any of our local sales teams can guide you in picking out one that’s just right for you. Check out our wide selection of Momentum bikes or e-bikes on our website.

Never Too Late to Start Biking!

Whether you’ve never tried it, or you haven’t ridden in a long time, it’s never too late to pick it up again. Here are a few reasons why cycling is worth it:

  • It’s good for you: there’s extensive research that shows biking helps you get in shape both physically and mentally. Even biking as little as 15-20 minutes a day can make a difference and it’s so easy to fit into your schedule! You can ride to work, exercise around the park, run errands with it, or cycle as a way to spend quality time with those you love.
  • It’s good for your community: fellow bike lovers are some of the nicest and most helpful people you’ll ever meet. They have the best tips on how to take care of your bike, where to explore, and when the best events will take place! Cycling together is not only great for meeting people but also a fun way to motivate yourself.
  • It’s good for the world: both normal bikes and e-bikes are some of the most eco-friendly ways to get around. Don’t believe us? Check out how 5 Ways Commuting By Bike Benefits the Environment.

Go Your Way

Is the bicycle one of mankind's best inventions? We sure think so! They lift people up, are good for the environment, and often boost the local economy. Every day we ride, we celebrate the power of the bicycle. At Momentum, our vision is exactly that – empowering people to go their own way through cycling at their own pace.

As someone wise once said: “Cyclists see considerably more of this beautiful world than any other class of citizens. A good bicycle, well applied, will cure most ills this flesh is heir to.” – Dr. K.K. Doty.
