If you can, shopping locally not only reduces your personal carbon footprint, but it also keeps more money in your local area as it helps support local businesses and families – and that’s definitely in keeping with the festive spirit. If you plan a little and don’t leave all your shopping until the last minute (no judgement if you do!), then you won’t have to rely on the big companies and their enticing Same Day/Next Day Delivery options. And, if you really have left it all until the last minute, then shopping locally will help you even more!
As well as shopping closer to home, if you can avoid using a car and instead opt for carrying any gifts home on your bike or e-bike then that’ll make a world of difference, too. Or, if you’re lucky enough to have a cargo e-bike, then it really is its time to shine! Our PAKYAK E+ is made for holiday shopping!
This year we focus on putting our personal health and that of the planet first. Sustainability is not always about spending more money but spending wisely and being creative with what you already have. If you want to buy a tree, we recommend: 1) renting one, 2) buying secondhand, 3) buying a potted and locally grown tree, or 4) using a large plant instead. If you already have a tree (especially a plastic one), please re-use and store it for the next year. If you’d like to work on a fun project, we recommend making your own Christmas tree with items you already have around the house, like a ladder, boxes, books, and even corks! Whatever you use, please make sure you prioritize safety and that the materials can be recycled.
Secret Santa is a favorite tradition for many but finding the right gift for the right person can be seriously challenging. Alongside shopping locally, for a greener gift, why not try thrift shops, secondhand bookstores, your local bakery, or why not find a picture frame for a special photo of you and your friend? Also, consider regifting something you’ve loved: a book you enjoyed; or toys your kids have grown out of. We’re big fans of bikes and e-bikes as great holiday gifts - obviously! They’re a real investment, not just for your health but also your lifestyle and commute. It’s a gift that keeps on giving, all year round!
Whether you prefer smaller gatherings or big community celebrations, part of the magic is bringing people together to eat, play, and sing. It’s these special moments that connect us. Even if you’re not celebrating the main event together, why not ride your bike or e-bike around the neighborhood to say hi to friends or ride around town to discover fun festive events? The simple act of reaching out to your community while enjoying the fresh air outside is great for the soul.
The act of giving is central to the festive spirit – and you don’t have to spend money to give a gift. Volunteering with local charities is a great way to give back and an opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while making a difference . It’s a chance to reflect on your own situation and show the next generation how to be kind. There’s no shortage of causes you can contribute to, so just choose one close to your heart and make some time in your diary. And if you can’t spare the physical time, maybe you could donate clothes you rarely wear, warm meals, or toys your kids have outgrown to people in need?
Christmas markets are another great way to support and shop local businesses. Not only do they give off serious cozy vibes and make a great place to get a mulled wine and mince pie from, but you can keep your carbon footprint low for your festive feast by getting your big shop from local suppliers. We’ve been inspired by our friend, Weelicious, who shops her local farmer’s market every week and takes it all home on her PakYak E+ cargo e-bike.
Whether you’re planning a quiet festive break watching Christmas classics like Home Alone, or celebrating with your extended family, cooking and playing boardgames, we can all agree it takes preparation, teamwork, and finally gratitude for everything we have. A true gift is not so much the object but what it brings to our lives, and on that note, We wish you a lovely festive season.
